Kamal Haasan requests fans to drop the Ulaganayagan title. The honorary title “Ulaganayagan” meanning “Universal Hero” in Tamil. This title, earned through decades of iconic performances, has symbolized the immense respect he holds in the industry. However, Kamal now prefers to be called simply “Kamal Haasan” or “Kamal.” He believes that for an artist, the true measure of value lies in their work and talent, not in titles.

Kamal explained that he is deeply grateful for the love and admiration shown by his fans, who have celebrated his career with titles like “Universal Hero.” However, he feels it’s time to step away from such labels. In his view, titles can distance artists from the art itself, and he wants to be remembered for his craft rather than any titles attached to his name. He also noted that in the past, titles held significant meaning, as they were given by audiences as a mark of respect for an actor’s dedication and contribution. Today, however, he observes that titles are often adopted too freely, sometimes losing the essence they once held.
Kamal’s decision comes from his belief that cinema is a collaborative art form, where success is the result of efforts by directors, writers, technicians, actors, and audiences alike. By stepping away from his title, he hopes to highlight the importance of teamwork and the collective spirit of cinema. Kamal believes that an artist should never be seen as greater than the art itself. Instead, he prefers to focus on improving his skills, learning, and continuing his journey in film.
He also shared that he wishes to set an example in the industry, inspiring others to focus on the quality of their work over titles and self-promotion. Kamal clarified that his decision was made after much thought and self-reflection. He respectfully requested fans to honor his wishes by calling him simply “Kamal Haasan” or “Kamal,” reflecting his dedication to his craft over personal titles.
Currently, Kamal is working with Mani Ratnam on an upcoming film titled Thug Life, expected to release in April. Despite his long and illustrious career, Kamal remains committed to learning and evolving, embracing his role as an eternal student of cinema. This choice reflects Kamal’s humble approach to his legacy and a reminder of his commitment to his craft.
